Botulinnum, otherwise called Botox, has been used in mainstream medicine for many years – against excessive sweating on hands, feet and armpits, against wryneck conditions, weak bladders and much more. Moreover, Botox has become an established means for skin smoothing, used to reduce wrinkles on the face and throat.
How does this work? Botox inhibits muscle movement by blocking the required messenger substrates, temporarily. Botox is administered in small quantities such that there’s no effect on the rest of the body.
Considering that facial muscles are constantly active, the skin develops lines and wrinkles with time. These are characteristic in zones above the nose (frown wrinkles) and on the brow, or laugh lines around the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet). These wrinkles get deeper with time. As soon as the movement of the muscles causing the wrinkles is inhibited, the skin gets smoothed out again.
Given that the treatment affects and influences your facial expressions, we take time to listen to you and explain the scope of the treatment and its outcome. Theoretically, we can smooth out your entire face, but you’d end up with what we call “the mask effect” – you won’t be able to move your facial muscles, or will hardly be able to use any of them.
Therefore, we usually administer Botox in quantities with the least effect on facial expressions. Consequently, the wrinkles are hardly visible when the face is relaxed, while facial expressions in those areas remain possible, though limited.
The effect usually lasts from six to eight months – sometimes, even longer. After that, the wrinkles become visible again.
A welcome effect: the unwanted facial gestures that cause the wrinkles partly lose their function due to having been inactive for some time. In other words, you “forget” to frown. This effect persists long after the effect of the Botox subsides. The result: less wrinkles in the long run.
The costs depend primarily on your individual wishes and requirements, as well as the extent and depth of the wrinkles. For best results, we usually recommend additional treatment with Hyaluronic Acid, or laser therapy. The costs are very much dependent on the scope of work and can only be determined after consultation.
